Overview

A warm, editorial theme for restaurants and trattorias: a printed-menu look with dotted leaders, dietary icons and allergens, "open now" hours, table requests, events, press and a map.

Tavolina looks like the menu card on a good trattoria table: cream paper, espresso ink, paprika and olive, big DM Serif Display headlines with an italic phrase, dish names in serif italic, small capitals, hairline rules, double-ruled menu cards, olive-sprig ornaments and arched "trattoria window" photos. Specials and events go on a dark chalkboard band, the header turns into frosted glass when the page scrolls, and a candlelit dark scheme is one click away. It needs no page builder.

Made for restaurants

  • The menu. Dishes and drinks with prices (or sizes such as Glass / Bottle, Small / Large), dietary marks (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free…), the 14 EU allergens as numbers or names, chef's picks, new dishes and spice level. The menu page shows a printed card with a switcher (Lunch, Dinner, Drinks), section links that stay in view, two columns with dotted leaders, the key, and a filter bar (search, dietary chips, allergens to leave out, sorting).
  • Every dish has its page: an arched photo, the section, badges, the price, the dish facts (dietary, allergens, pairing, calories) and its story, with more dishes from the same section.
  • Opening hours with lunch and dinner, holidays and special dates, an "open now" chip in the header that stays right on cached pages, today's hours in the footer.
  • Reservations: a table request form that only offers times when the restaurant is open; requests arrive under Messages and by email. Or link to your booking service.
  • Events and specials: winemaker dinners, music nights, classes, holiday menus, with dates, prices, tickets or seat requests, and an "Upcoming events" Query Loop.
  • Visit us: the address, phone, directions and a map that loads only after a click.
  • Press quotes, a gallery and order links (delivery, takeaway, gift cards) from the Restaurant settings page.
  • Structured data for the restaurant, its menu and its events.

Built in

  • Patterns: 56, including 7 heroes (dining room with a "Since 2014" stamp, background video, arched window, tonight's menu card, the next event, book a table, editorial), menu cards, chalkboard specials, dish spotlight, wine list, plant-based favourites, galleries (masonry and carousel), video sections, forms (reservation, private dining, contact, newsletter, gift cards), the chef, numbers, how a day goes, FAQ, guest notes, press marquee, journal sections, calls to action, footers and full pages (Home, About, Menu, Visit, Reservations, Gallery, Private dining).
  • Templates for the blog (home, single, page, archive, search, 404) and the restaurant (menu, one menu, menu section, dietary tag, menu search, dish, events, event type, event), plus Landing page, Wide page and Page without title.
  • Style variations: Paper (default), Olive, Candlelight (dark first), Coastal (for seafood places) and Saffron, each with its own light and dark palette.
  • Forms, galleries with a lightbox, featured video, motion (entrance animations, marquees, count-up numbers; calm with reduced motion), light and dark schemes, reading progress and share buttons.

Questions

Do I need a plugin?

Menu prices, dietary tags, hours and events are entered with the free Secure Custom Fields plugin; Tavolina offers to install it with one click. Without it everything still displays, but the extra fields can't be edited.

How do I add a dish?

Menu → Add menu item. The title is the dish name, the excerpt is the line shown on the menu, the content is its longer story, the featured image its photo. Choose its menu, section and dietary tags, then fill in the price (or sizes), allergens and badges below.

Where do I set the opening hours, address and phone?

In the Restaurant menu of the dashboard: Details, Location, Opening hours (weekly hours and special dates), Reservations, Order and gift cards, Press and Gallery.

Where do reservation requests go?

Every request is saved under Messages in the dashboard and emailed to the site's admin email address. Change the recipient under Messages → Settings or in the reservation block's settings. With a booking service address in Restaurant → Reservations, the "Book a table" buttons go there instead.

How do I get the demo restaurant?

Appearance → Import demo imports "Fennel & Fig": menus, dishes, events, pages, settings and a menu. You can remove it again from the same screen.

How does dark mode work?

The sun/moon button in the header switches between the paper and the candlelit scheme and remembers the choice on that device. The Candlelight style variation starts in the dark scheme for everyone.

Can I turn off the animations?

Visitors who ask their device for reduced motion get a calm site automatically (the background video pauses too). To remove an animation from a block, open the block's Motion panel in the editor.
